Sister Sunny Sunday School 1/27/13

Sister Sunny Sunday School 1/27/13
Jacob knew the value of the inheritance.

We could criticize him for his methods, but he knew the value of what he sought and he worked hard for what he received.  He vowed to God that he would serve Him and was thankful for what God had given him.  He gave God all the glory.

Gen 32:9  And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
Gen 32:10  I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

We see that Jacob wrestled with the angel and demanded a blessing.  This shows a part of his personality.

Gen 32:24  And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
Gen 32:25  And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
Gen 32:26  And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
Gen 32:27  And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
Gen 32:28  And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

Will we be as Jacob and value our inheritance or as Esau who despised his birthright?

There are other examples in the scripture of people that were disobedient to the Word of God and tried to obtain an inheritance for themselves.

Balaam desired honor to the point that he got ahead of God (Num 22).

Achan was disobedient and took spoil that was forbidden (Jos 7:1).

Aaron and Miriam were jealous of Moses.

Num 12:2  And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.

Korah wanted to have the position that Moses and Aaron had.

Num 16:3  And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?

Rather be of a humble spirit with the lowly than divide the spoil with the proud.

Pro 16:19  Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

We don’t need to be anyone special, recognized for anything, or praised for what we do.  All honor and glory goes to God.  Without Him we are nothing.

Luk 17:9  Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.
Luk 17:10  So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

The king of Assyria was used of God to humble the Children of Israel.  He became lifted up in himself and thought that in his own strength he had accomplished it.

Isa 10:12  Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
Isa 10:13  For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man:
Isa 10:14  And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.
Isa 10:15  Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.
Isa 10:16  Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

We don’t want to desire to be with the proud or even receive of the spoil.  The Lord is our portion.

Lam 3:21  This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
Lam 3:22  It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
Lam 3:23  They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Lam 3:24  The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
Lam 3:25  The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
Lam 3:26  It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

There is spoil that we do not want; It is the spoil that pride would like us to take.  The spoil of honor: all glory, honor and praise is to go to God (Is 42:8).

Of Him, to Him, and through Him are all things:

Rom 11:36  For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

1Pe 4:10  As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
1Pe 4:11  If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Every good gift and perfect gift is from above (James 1:17).

He gives wisdom to the wise (Dan 2:21).

He gives understanding to the simple (Ps 119:130).

He increases strength (Is 40:28,29).  To Him be all honor and glory.

Jer 9:23  Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
Jer 9:24  But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

Do you think you know anything?  Glory not in this but glory rather in the Lord and that you can have Him as your portion.

1 Co 3:19-21 the wisdom of the world is foolishness with God.

1 Co 1:18-21 God has destroyed the wisdom of the wise and made foolish the wisdom of this world.

Ex 36:1 wise-hearted: in whom the Lord had put wisdom to know how to work.

We can of our own selves do nothing.  Jesus said this of himself, how much more is it true of us (Jn 5:30)?
The inheritance of the lowly:

Psa 34:18  The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Nigh – near, allied, kinfolk, neighbor.

Saveth – to be open, wide, or free; to free, to succor; defend, deliver, help, preserve, rescue, give victory.

Psa 138:6  Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

Respect – to see; approve, behold, consider, discern, enjoy, gaze, take heed, look one on another, perceive, provide, regard, show(self), think, view.

Isa 66:2  For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

We want God to regard us, to care about us and to think upon us.  He promises to do this to the lowly, to those that are poor and contrite of spirit, and to those that respect and obey His Word.
