Sister Teri Sunday School 7/8/12
2Co 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2Co 5:18  And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2Co 5:19  To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
2Co 5:20  Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
2Co 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

God made the change in us so that we would no longer live for self but henceforth live for Him.

Eph 1:4  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Eph 1:5  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Eph 1:6  To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
Eph 1:7  In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Eph 1:8  Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
Eph 1:9  Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
Eph 1:10  That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Eph 1:11  In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
Eph 1:12  That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
Eph 1:13  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Eph 1:14  Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

His plan before He created the world was that we could live for Him in Holiness.  Predestinated means preplanned.  His plan was for us to be children to Him.  Not just part of his creation like the animals but actually children.  Glory be to God! 

It is by His blood that this redemption and forgiveness was given to us.  The price was His blood.  It is a terrible price and what love that He was willing to do that! 

He made known His will to us.  We would not be saved if He had not made His will known to us.  It is a work of His Spirit.

It is His plan that we all be gathered into the family of God and into that personal relationship with God.  He doesn’t want us all scattered and doing our own thing. 

The study today is the part the Holy Spirit plays in our salvation.  It is a part of the redemption and the inheritance.  What is available to us today is much greater than what was available to those under the old covenant.  They didn’t have the same access to the Holy Spirit that we have today.

Eph 2:1  And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Eph 2:2  Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Many of us don’t like to remember our past.  Yet we need to think on it sometimes so that we can remember where God brought us from.  It was in my rebellion and misconduct that He reached out to me. 

I raised my children to serve God.  Since they are not serving God it is easy for me to have anger toward what they are doing.  I need to remember where God brought me from.  I chose to rebel against the good teachings that my parents taught me, Godly principals.  I chose to go over the top of them and dwell in rebellion.  I have scars from doing this.  The longer a person continues in sin the greater the scars.  The enemy has a way of taking a soul further and further and binding them more and more. 

There is a spirit working in the children of disobedience.  There was a spirit that was working in me and driving me when I wasn’t saved.  There were times that I recognized it and realized it.  I didn’t know what to do with it so I would push the knowledge off.

Eph 2:3  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Eph 2:4  But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Eph 2:5  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Eph 2:6  And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

He raised us up out of that; He didn’t leave us in it, wallowing in it.  He raised us to sit together in heavenly places in Him.  Isn’t that a blessing?

Eph 2:7  That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
Eph 2:8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

It was by the grace of God.  There was nothing that we could do to deliver ourselves.  It was in our nature; there was a spirit that was working in us that we needed deliverance from.  Our resolutions were made and easily broken. 

Eph 2:9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Eph 2:10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

We walk holy only as long as we get a hold of the Spirit of God.  He gives us the power to become holy and the power to stay holy.  We are His workmanship created for good works.  He wants to work His will in us.

Eph 2:11  Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

We, as Gentiles, were not a part of that family.  There was pride in being a Jew and not just a Gentile.  God extended this plan to all of us.

Eph 2:12  That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
Eph 2:13  But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
Eph 2:14  For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

Peace means to join, to set at one again.  There are things that go with peace: rest and prosperity.  This is part of the inheritance that goes with being a part of His family.  We can be set at one and joined with Him.

Eph 2:15  Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
Eph 2:16  And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
Eph 2:17  And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
Eph 2:18  For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

Through Jesus, by the Spirit, in all of this it involves the working of the Spirit of God.

Eph 2:19  Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
Eph 2:20  And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
Eph 2:21  In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
Eph 2:22  In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

God sets the members in the body.  He puts them in place where we can function as a unit.  We are to be a temple of God.  God wants the Spirit to dwell in us and not just with us.  This was not available in the old covenant. 

The Spirit of God will not dwell in an unclean vessel.  It took the sacrifice of Jesus to make us fit to be the temple of God.

1Co 6:9  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1Co 6:10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1Co 6:11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

It is a work of the Spirit of God in our lives that makes that change.

1Co 6:17  But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
1Co 6:18  Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
1Co 6:19  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1Co 6:20  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

We cannot have sin of any sort being fulfilled in our body and expect the Spirit of God to dwell within. 
To receive the Spirit of God we must open ourselves full up to Him and yield ourselves fully to God.  When I first heard the message of sanctification, lay myself out and let Him have complete control, it was scary to me.  I didn’t want to go back to sin but I wanted to still hold onto that control.  It was hard for me to yield fully. 

When we choose to do right we will suffer some things.  It is so much better to suffer with the Spirit of God within us than otherwise.  I didn’t want to do wrong and wanted to do right.  I came to the realization that I needed the Holy Spirit within me in order to do right with my family and in every way.

Rom 6:6  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7  For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 6:8  Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Rom 6:9  Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Rom 6:10  For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Rom 6:11  Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 6:12  Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Rom 6:13  Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Rom 6:14  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Rom 6:15  What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Rom 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Rom 6:17  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Rom 6:18  Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Rom 6:19  I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
Rom 6:20  For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
Rom 6:21  What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
Rom 6:22  But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
Rom 6:23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Verse 6, 9-11, 13, 17, 18, 22, 23.  In chapter seven Paul explains the battle that goes on as a sinner and a part of this goes on when we are not sanctified.  We desire to do the will of God but don’t have the strength.

Chapter seven shows the carnal mind working.  Chapter 8 shows what we can have through the Spirit of God.

Rom 8:1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 8:2  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom 8:3  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Rom 8:4  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 8:5  For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Rom 8:7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Rom 8:8  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

This is the struggle that I had: I battled to do my own way but it would have led me away from God.

Rom 8:9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

When we get saved we have the Spirit of God with us but not within us.  We are still saved if we are not sanctified but we need the Spirit of God within us.

Joh 14:15  If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Joh 14:16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Joh 14:17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Sinners cannot receive the Spirit of God.  He will not dwell in an unclean vessel.

Joh 14:26  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Joh 14:27  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The Spirit of God reminds and teaches us.  We need the Spirit of God within.  I was trying to explain to my family and friends what had happened and couldn’t.  After I was sanctified it was amazing.  Scriptures that I had heard as a child would come to me. 

Act 1:8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

After you’ve received the Holy Spirit, you receive power to serve God and be a witness.

You will need the power of God within to stay saved and to carry out the responsibility that God has given us.  To be a witness we need the Spirit.
