Temptation-Incite, to entice to an act that is evil,

Temptation in Strong’s a putting to proof by experiment, or experience adversity, try, persuasion, test, tempt.

Chamber’s the test of an alien power of the possessions held by a personality.

Matthew Henry: fiery darts, thorns in the flesh buffetings, wrestlings, combats.

When we are saved, what possessions do we hold?

Benefits –

We need to be aware of the temptations of the enemy.  You can edify me.  We want to use our time here to edify and help each other that we will not fall, but that we will make it.

1.      Justification – there is a definite experience in both justification and sanctification.

What do we first get in justification?

Col 3:9  Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

We get rid of the old man with his deeds – sins in justification.

The realization of sin is the first realization that we must come to.  When we realize that we are a sinner then we can do something about it.  How real is it?  It is real.  Some people think, “I am doing fine; I have a clean life.”  That is not enough if you are a sinner.

Rom 3:23  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

This morning I wondered what the definition of ‘short’ is.  I know what it is like to be short and it is very impairing sometimes.  It means to be destitute, fail, lack, suffer need.  In our culture we don’t suffer much need.  When we realize that we fall short in justification we realize how needy we are.

We can compare ourselves with someone else and say, I have never been that bad, in God’s sight we are.

Rom 7:7  What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

Sin: God forbids it.

Eph 2:1  And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Eph 2:2  Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

When we realize where we stand before God it does something to our heart that it comes into reality.  So many people don’t face reality.  They cannot accept it.  Aren’t you thankful that one day God brought you to reality?  It was a wonderful day for me.

Jas 4:17  Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

When we know what we should do and don’t do it, then call it what it is, sin.

2Co 7:10  For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
2Co 7:11  For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

Godly sorrow works something – repentance.  Godly sorrow is so vital for us to become saints of God.

What carefulness:

Luk 1:74  That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
Luk 1:75  In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

We are delivered out of the hand of the enemy for a reason: that we might serve Him all the days of our life.  The enemy comes to take this possession from us.  He wants to rob us of being careful, of holiness, and of righteousness.  How easy is it to say, “It really doesn’t matter; I don’t’ care?”  What carefulness does it bring to our possession of that wonderful gift of salvation?

Clearing of yourself:  does the devil try to accuse you?  “You’ve done something wrong.”  If you have cleared yourself with God and man, then you have every right to say, “I am saved.”

Then you have to keep clear.  You must stay clear with all the saints no matter if they are clear back east or anywhere else.  If we don’t, the devil will rob us.  “You don’t think well of so in so.”  We must stay clear in our heart and work to stay clear or the enemy will rob us of that.

Sister Sharon - When I do something to try to clear things, the enemy is great to badger me.  I had prayed that God would please undertake for the issue and he did it beautifully.  The enemy would try to rob us of being clear.  We do our best to obey and we do it from the heart and then here he comes, he accuses us and accuses us.  He is a liar.

What indignation – much grief, greatly afflicted, much displeased.  Great indignation, we must have great indignation against sin.  It brings us much grief.  When we see our children unsaved, it brings much grief to our heart.  I told Craig one day, “I didn’t have you so that you would go to hell.”

We need to be afflicted, indignant against all sin, much displeased.  If we are not careful sin becomes too common.  We need to keep it exceedingly sinful or the devil will rob us from this indignation.  Sometimes it brings a separation from us and our loved ones.  We must be willing to be misunderstood, be loyal to God and keep sin exceedingly sinful.

There is a strong spirit that tries to work that we don’t keep it exceedingly sinful, “Don’t judge, there is nothing wrong with this…”  we don’t want to be rude and crude; we want to be able to love the person but hate the sin.  We really need God’s help.

It is so important to keep that indignation against sin.

Fear – godly sorrow works fear, not fearful of things, or man, it puts the fear of God in our heart that we don’t want to displease Him.  Carefulness.  We must fear God, be reverent toward Him.

Revenge: vindication, exonerate from charges, absolved from suspicion or guilt, suspend guilt, justify.  It is not getting back at someone, it does something in our heart that we must be free of guilt.

Vehement desire, longing for, earnest.  He didn’t just say, desire, but put emphasis with it.  Longing for, be earnest in your desire.  I was really in earnest and had a desire to get my fence done this year.  I did it because I had more than just a desire to look out there and think of a new fence, I put works to it.  A vehement desire is one that you do something about.

God gives us more than just to desire Him in our heart.  He puts an emphasis in it.  “Get at it.”

Zeal – we must be zealous.  What does zeal mean to you?

Be earnest in desire.  Sometimes it makes people uncomfortable to be around you.  Have a real zeal for God and His work that we need to do.  We must have a zeal.

If the enemy can’t get you to be careless, he can pull us away by having no zeal.  He will turn around and use something else against us to rob us, take our possessions that we have that God has given us through Godly sorrow.

2.      Repentance:

1Jn 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

There is something about godly sorrow that brings repentance from the heart.  I think we need more tears.  It is not a shame to cry when we come to the altar.  We need true repentance and it breaks us up inside.  There is something about God moving on our hearts that brings godly sorrow.

Act 3:19  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

What a wonderful thing when our sins are blotted out.  Godly sorrow really truly brings repentance.  What a benefit we have from repentance!

Rom 5:1  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Great peace have they that love the Lord and nothing shall offend them. Psalms 119:165

There is nothing like peace; that is one thing that the enemy really tries to take from us.  Hold onto it hold onto it with godly sorrow and repentance.  Let nothing take our peace.
