1Jn 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for
the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was
manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
The works of the devil are sin and death. Jesus was manifested for the purpose of
destroying these works.
Joh 8:43 Why do ye not
understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
Joh 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil,
and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning,
and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh
a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
In the beginning the devil deceived Eve, lying to her, “you
shall not surely die.” Adam and Eve both
sinned because of his lies and through their sin death entered the world. God drove them out of the Garden of Eden lest
they should eat of the tree of life.
All of their children were born in the image of Adam rather
than the image of God. Cain, one of
their children, murdered his brother.
Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers
of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that
through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the
devil;
Heb 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death
were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Adam Clark - That through death - That by the merit of his own death, making atonement for sin, and procuring the almighty energy of the Holy Spirit, he might counterwork καταργηση, or render useless and ineffectual, all the operations of him who had the power, κρατος, or influence, to bring death into the world; so that death, which was intended by him who was a murderer from the beginning to be the final ruin of mankind, becomes the instrument of their exaltation and endless glory; and thus the death brought in by Satan is counterworked and rendered ineffectual by the death of Christ.
Jesus came to render the works of the enemy useless and
ineffectual. No longer does the power of
sin and death have to reign in our lives.
We don’t have to be as Jesus called the Jews that would not hear Him,
“Of your father the devil.” We can be
born again, have a new birth, and live victorious over the power of sin and
death through Jesus’ death.
Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in
sin, that grace may abound?
Rom 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to
sin, live any longer therein?
Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were
baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism
into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the
Father, even so we also should
walk in newness of life.
Rom 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the
likeness of his death, we shall be also in the
likeness of his resurrection:
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified
with him, that the body of sin might be
destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe
that we shall also live with him:
Rom 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the
dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Rom 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once:
but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto
God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal
body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but
yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your
members as instruments of righteousness
unto God.
Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for
ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Thank God we can walk in newness of life! Through the death and life of Jesus we can
have victory over the power of death and sin and live and walk in newness of
life. We can now yield our members as
instruments of righteousness and no longer have to be a servant of sin and
death.
Rom 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not
under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves
servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto
death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants
of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was
delivered you.
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the
servants of righteousness.
Rom 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of
the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to
uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members
servants to righteousness unto holiness.
Yield your members servants to righteousness. As Jesus was manifest to destroy the works of
the devil, we are to work the works of Jesus.
Our mission is to be in this world as Jesus was.
1Jn 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may
have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this
world.
He is pure and holy and we are to be the same. He was an ambassador to man sent to show
forth the Father and we are to be the same.
He was manifested to destroy the works of the devil and we are to do the
same.
1Jn 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath
bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world
knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1Jn 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it
doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear,
we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1Jn 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him
purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
This reading goes on to teach that we should not sin and
includes our text:
1Jn 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for
the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was
manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,
but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness
of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of
God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to
stand.
We are in a battle against sin and death. This battle is to be against principalities,
powers, rulers of darkness of this world and against spiritual wickedness in
high places. Jesus was manifested that
he might destroy the works of the devil and we are to continue in this battle.
Rom 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand:
let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour
of light.
Rom 13:13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in
rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and
envying.
Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make
not provision for the flesh, to fulfil
the lusts thereof.
The enemy will try to distract us from the true battle with
things of this world. If he can direct
our attention elsewhere then we will not be fighting the battle designed by God.
Song: Army
of the Lord
Chorus:
Are we walking into the enemy’s camp, laying our weapons down?
Shedding our armor as we go, Leaving it on the ground?
We’ve got to be strong in the power of His might.
Prove to the enemy: We are the army of the Lord and we’ve won the victory.
Are we walking into the enemy’s camp, laying our weapons down?
Shedding our armor as we go, Leaving it on the ground?
We’ve got to be strong in the power of His might.
Prove to the enemy: We are the army of the Lord and we’ve won the victory.
Verse1:
All around us the war is going on, between the wrong and the right.
We’ve got to choose which side we’re on, the darkness or the light.
Some of the soldiers of the Lord just don’t realize:
That the captain of the army of darkness is come to blind their eyes.
All around us the war is going on, between the wrong and the right.
We’ve got to choose which side we’re on, the darkness or the light.
Some of the soldiers of the Lord just don’t realize:
That the captain of the army of darkness is come to blind their eyes.
Verse2:
Can’t you see that we’re in a battle; there’s no place to hide.
The shields of faith are full of darts, shooting from every side.
Just shake out the darts and run right at ‘em and remember who you’re fighting for.
Don’t fall asleep cause if they catch you they’ll tag you prisoner of war.
