Sister Sharron Sunday School 4/5/15
Joh 20:1 The first day
of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the
sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
Luk 23:55 And the women also, which came with him from
Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
Luk 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and
ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
Here they were, the soldiers and the Jews had just crucified
Jesus. The Jews and the disciples were
still in the area. The disciples were
very cautious. They didn’t want to be
caught up as Jesus had been.
The Jews were cautious because they remembered that Jesus
had said that He would rise again. They
didn’t want that. They didn’t want Him
to prove that He was God. They set a
stone and sealed the tomb and put soldiers there.
Luk 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the
sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
Luk 24:2
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
Luk 24:3
And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
Luk 24:4
And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two
men stood by them in shining garments:
Luk 24:5
And as they were afraid, and bowed down their
faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
Luk 24:6
He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was
yet in Galilee,
Luk 24:7
Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men,
and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Luk 24:8
And they remembered his words,
Luk 24:9
And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the
eleven, and to all the rest.
Luk 24:10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these
things unto the apostles.
Joh 20:1 The first day
of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the
sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
Joh 20:2
Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple,
whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the
sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
Joh 20:3
Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the
sepulchre.
Joh 20:4
So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and
came first to the sepulchre.
Joh 20:5
And he stooping down, and looking in,
saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.
Joh 20:6
Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and
seeth the linen clothes lie,
Joh 20:7
And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen
clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
Joh 20:8
Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre,
and he saw, and believed.
Joh 20:9
For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the
dead.
Joh 20:10 Then the disciples went away again unto their
own home.
Mary told Peter and John that they had taken Jesus and “We
don’t know where they laid Him.” Jesus
had told them that He would rise again.
They didn’t think of that. All
she could think was that He was gone and she didn’t know where He had been
taken.
Peter went in and saw those linen clothes. Jesus didn’t carry the linen clothes with Him
as Lazarus did. Jesus was done with the
grave. Lazarus would have to go back to
the grave. Jesus was through with the
grave, never to return.
John saw and believed.
Joh 20:11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre
weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and
looked into the sepulchre,
Joh 20:12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the
one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
Joh 20:13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest
thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not
where they have laid him.
Joh 20:14 And when she had thus said, she turned
herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
Joh 20:15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to
be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me
where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
Joh 20:16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to
say, Master.
Mary was forgiven much.
He who has been forgiven much loves much. Mary loved Jesus. She had come with ointments to anoint and she
shed her tears for the loss. It was a
heart grief to her that He had to suffer and die. When He was born, there were a host of
angels. Angels were sent at this time as
well.
It represents holiness.
We must live holy. If you are
following Jesus with all your heart and He didn’t sin, how could you sin? Jesus came to clean us up.
She didn’t recognize Jesus.
Maybe she wasn’t expecting Him.
She must have been like the men walking the road to Emmaeus. They didn’t recognize Him. They thought He would be gone.
She was weeping. Her
vision probably wasn’t the best. The
other disciples went on their way but she tarried at the sepulcher. Because she tarried she saw what others did
not. If we were to tarry longer in the
presence of God in our devotions and time spent with Him, I wonder if we would
see more.
She probably stayed there hoping someone would come and tell
her where He was.
Joh 20:17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my
brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and
to my God, and
your God.
I can see her here wanting to hold Him, just as Simeon
wanted to hold the child when He came to the temple. I can see Jesus backing up and saying, “Not
yet.”
Joh 20:18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples
that she had seen the Lord, and that he
had spoken these things unto her.
Joh 20:19 Then the same day at evening, being the first
day of the week, when the doors were
shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and
stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
They shut the door, they didn’t want the Jews to come and
find them assembled. They didn’t want to
be crucified as Jesus was. Here came
Jesus. In our turmoil and battle, how
wonderful it is when Jesus comes!
Joh 20:20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples
glad, when they saw the Lord.
Joh 20:21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my
Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
Joh 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
Joh 20:23 Whose soever sins ye
remit, they are remitted unto them; and
whose soever sins
ye retain, they are retained.
Joh 20:24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus,
was not with them when Jesus came.
Joh 20:25 The other disciples therefore said unto him,
We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands
the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust
my hand into his side, I will not believe.
Joh 20:26 And after eight days again his disciples were
within, and Thomas with them: then came
Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
Joh 20:27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach
hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
Joh 20:28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My
Lord and my God.
Joh 20:29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not
seen, and yet have believed.
Even that one that held back because he hadn’t seen, once he
saw, he believed.
Joh 20:30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the
presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
Joh 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe
that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life
through his name.
Joh 21:1 After these things Jesus shewed himself again
to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.
Joh 21:2
There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and
Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons
of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
Joh 21:3
Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also
go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that
night they caught nothing.
Joh 21:4
But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the
disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
Joh 21:5
Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye
any meat? They answered him, No.
Joh 21:6
And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right
side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they
were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
Joh 21:7
Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the
Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto
him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
Joh 21:8
And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far
from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.
Joh 21:9
As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there,
and fish laid thereon, and bread.
Joh 21:10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
Joh 21:11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land
full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so
many, yet was not the net broken.
Joh 21:12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art
thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
There was plenty to eat.
There is plenty of food in God’s kingdom.
Joh 21:13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and
giveth them, and fish likewise.
Joh 21:14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed
himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
When the rich man was in hell, he wanted Lazarus to go warn
his brothers. Jesus said, “They have the
law and the prophets. Let them read
them.” We have the Word of God and are
responsible.
Joh 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon
Peter, Simon, son
of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He
saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
Joh 21:16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea,
Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Joh 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he
said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou
knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
It appears that Jesus wants us to often tell Him that we
love Him. Peter denied Jesus three times
and here he declares his love to Him three times.
When they had left all to follow Jesus. We don’t know how much time was between His
visits. There were stretches that they
didn’t know, “What are we to do now?”
Jesus was here letting them know that He was giving them a commission. By saying it three times it was made known
that it was not just something said in passing, but “This is what I want you to
do.”
I love the full and free and bigness of Christ’s love. Even though Peter put himself out of the
circle, yet Christ put His arms out and pulled him back. God forgave Peter and restored him
fully.
To forgive, forget, and have the freedom again it takes
Christ. Peter had gone out and wept bitterly. He had fully repented. Repentance is a beautiful thing. Hard to come to, but after it is a wonderful
release.
Even though Peter had denied Him, He forgave and there was
nothing between.
Jesus was getting ready to leave in the physical. He was trying to teach them a lesson, they
were toiling to fish and didn’t catch anything.
When they fished under the direction of God then they caught many
fish.
He wanted them to know that they couldn’t do anything of
themselves but needed the direction and leading spiritually in order to
accomplish anything.
Joh 21:18 Verily, verily, I say
unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither
thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands,
and another shall gird thee, and carry thee
whither thou wouldest not.
Joh 21:19 This spake he, signifying by what death he
should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
Joh 21:20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple
whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and
said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
Joh 21:21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and
what shall this man do?
Joh 21:22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow
thou me.
Joh 21:23 Then went this saying abroad among the
brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He
shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
Joh 21:24 This is the disciple which testifieth of
these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
Joh 21:25 And there are also many other things which
Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even
the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
Peter wanted to get things lined out in his mind and asked
questions. Jesus said, “What is that to
thee?”
I have enough to take care of with just me.
Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every
creature.
Mar 16:16 He that believeth and
is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Mar 16:17 And these signs shall
follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall
speak with new tongues;
Mar 16:18 They shall take up
serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they
shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Mar 16:19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them,
he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
Mar 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every
where, the Lord working with them, and
confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
Mat 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into
Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
Mat 28:17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him:
but some doubted.
Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and
teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you
alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
