Sister Sunny Sunday School 11/9/14
We have seen in previous lessons who God is and how He
created man to be like Him. That God
desires to dwell with us but cannot tolerate the presence of sin. We saw how Adam and Eve sinned because they
went beyond the bounds that God had set for them. Then how God made a sacrifice for their sin
and clothing and made a way for them to worship Him and fellowship Him. This set the stage for Jesus coming to be the
perfect sacrifice for our sins.
Next we saw how everyone, including us, which were born to
Adam and Eve were born not in the image of God but in the image of Adam, with a
carnal, selfish, nature. In the last
lesson we learned that Jesus came to remove the curse that we received through
Adam. He is the giver of spiritual life,
eternal life.
Jesus was born not of Adam but was a son of God
Mat 1:18
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary
was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of
the Holy Ghost.
Mat 1:19
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man,
and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away
privily.
Mat 1:20
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord
appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to
take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy
Ghost.
Mat 1:21
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for
he shall save his people from their sins.
Mat 1:22
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of
the Lord by the prophet, saying,
Mat 1:23
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and
they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Luk 1:31
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and
shalt call his name JESUS.
Luk 1:32
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the
Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
Luk 1:33
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom
there shall be no end.
Luk 1:34
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
Luk 1:35
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon
thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that
holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Adam was created in the image of God and was therefore
called a son of God. He had that image
until he lost that image through sin.
Jesus is the Son of God and was with God from the beginning. He is the only begotten Son of God.
1Jn 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward
us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might
live through him.
Joh
3:16 For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17
For God sent not his Son into the world to
condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Joh 3:18 He that believeth on
him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because
he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Matthew Henry - Here is God's love in giving his Son for the world.
God so loved the world; so really, so richly. Behold and wonder, that the great
God should love such a worthless world! Here, also, is the great gospel duty,
to believe in Jesus Christ. God having given him to be our Prophet, Priest, and
King, we must give up ourselves to be ruled, and taught, and saved by him.
Joh 1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Joh 1:15
John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I
spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
Joh 1:16
And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
Joh 1:17
For the law was given by Moses, but
grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Joh 1:18
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the
bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
He was born in the image of God, holy, blameless, and
undefiled, and He did not sin in life.
He resisted temptation and He was made of flesh as we are.
He lived holy, without spot, and blameless for two special
reasons: to show us that we can, after salvation and sanctification, live holy
in this life, in this flesh, and resist temptation. And He did this so that He could become the
perfect, willing sacrifice: a lamb without spot and blemish, a sacrifice for
our sins.
Joh 1:14 And the
Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as
of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Here we see He was in the image of His Father, full of grace
and truth.
Heb 4:14
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the
heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our
profession.
Heb 4:15 For we
have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our
infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we
are, yet without sin.
Tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became
us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled,
separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
Holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made
higher than the heavens: This is a testimony of Jesus and is the image of
God.
2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might
be made the righteousness of God in him.
This was the plan from the beginning of the world. That God’s perfect Son, born of a virgin,
would come and take our sin upon Him so that we could again bear the image of
God and be righteous as He was.
1Pe 2:21
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us,
leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
1Pe 2:22
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
Jesus was the spotless Lamb of God. Manifested to take away our sins.
1Jn 3:5 And ye know that he was
manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
He died on the cross for our sin “He hath laid upon him the
iniquity of us all”
Tit 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem
us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of
good works.
Isa 53:3
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted
with grief: and we hid as it were our
faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Isa 53:4
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did
esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5
But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our
iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was
upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have
turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of
us all.
Isa 53:7
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he
is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is
dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
Isa 53:8
He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his
generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the
transgression of my people was he stricken.
Isa 53:9
And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death;
because he had done no violence, neither was any
deceit in his mouth.
Isa 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he
hath put him to grief: when thou shalt
make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his
seed, he shall prolong his days, and the
pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Isa 53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my
righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the
spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he
was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made
intercession for the transgressors.
How could the chief priests, scribes, and Pharisees not
recognize from the scripture that what they did to Jesus proved Him to be the
Son of God? He bore the iniquity of us
all, He made His soul an offering for sin, He bare the sin of many, and He made
intercession for the transgressors. He
is the spotless Lamb of God that died that we might be saved.
Gal 1:4
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this
present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
Isn’t that wonderful?
We can be delivered from this present evil world. Delivered from the evil in the world. In the world but not of the world. (Jn 17:14-16)
Gal 3:13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse
for us: for it is written, Cursed is
every one that hangeth on a tree:
Thank God that we are no longer subject to a law that set
you up to fail. It was a law that said
that you had to sin and the yearly sacrifice was made for your sin.
He rose again victorious over death that we might have hope
and live through Him a life of victory over death and sin.
Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers
of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that
through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the
devil;
Heb 2:15
And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime
subject to bondage.
Through death, He destroyed the power of death, which is
sin. Thank God for deliverance that we
don’t have to be all our lifetime subject to bondage to sin and fear of
death.
2Ti 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of
our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and
immortality to light through the gospel:
Abolish means to render entirely idle, useless. The same word is used in Romans 6:6, “that
the body of sin might be destroyed.”
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified
with him, that the body of sin might be
destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7
For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 6:8
Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with
him:
Rom 6:9
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath
no more dominion over him.
Rom 6:10
For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he
liveth unto God.
Rom 6:11
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive
unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 6:12
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it
in the lusts thereof.
Rom 6:13
Neither yield ye your members as
instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as
those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
